In addition to our equipment sales and installation services, we are able to offer our clients an inspection testing and repair service for their existing equipment and installations.

You have a duty of care under the various health and safety regulations to ensure the safety of everybody that you come in contact with though your work. Although you may not employ any staff you are still required to ensure the health and safety of all visitors and self employed persons on your premises.

Even if you only work on location your corporate clients and venues that you work at will have a health and safety policy that will almost certainly include portable appliance testing. They are perfectly within their rights to stop you using untested equipment on their premises as this may potentially be compromising the health and safety of their clients and staff. How much would you lose if you were prevented from photographing an event because the venue had a crack down on untested equipment being used on its premises? Probably a lot more than the price of the inspection!

Another point to consider is the insurance implications. What would the reaction of your insurance company in the event of an electrical accident if it could be proved that you had not taken reasonable precautions to ensure electrical safety?

The law does not specifically state that you have to test your equipment however you are required to make a ‘suitable and sufficient assessment of risk’ how can you prove that you have done this in the event of an accident if you have no procedure in place to inspect your equipment? The only effective way to meet these requirements is with a Portable Appliance Test.
